Connect 5 Outreach August 19, 2021

Good evening AHS Community,

This is Principal Quigg reaching out with some very important information.  First and foremost, welcome back!  We are so excited to have everyone back in person September 8th!  We have worked diligently to make this a smooth opening, despite the many challenges surrounding the Covid-19 virus.

As we return, HCPS has developed the standard that the minimum safety layer is 3 feet social distancing whenever, wherever possible.

*Please note, since the quarantine exception only applies to students, unvaccinated adults within 6 feet of someone with COVID-19 (with/or without a mask) will be required to quarantine and are at risk for getting COVID-19.

Freshman Orientation:

As you may know, there have been updates to the HCPS safety protocols including the requirement that all persons wear masks and socially distance (at least 3 feet) while indoors.  We are moving forward with our plans to host an in-person Freshman Orientation and Open House.  Our Freshman Orientation (for Freshman and any students new to AHS) is Tuesday August 24th.  Students with last names beginning with A-L should attend between 9:00-11:30. Students with last names beginning M-Z should attend from 1:00-3:30.  Students will have the opportunity to get their schedule, tour the building, ask questions to a student panel, learn about our A/B schedule, and meet some of our staff members.  In addition, physical education uniforms will be sold at this time.  The cost is $25.00 for both shorts and a tee-shirt. Due to Covid-19 precautions, only AHS students many attend this event.

Open House:

Currently, we are moving forward with our plans to host an in person open house for Aberdeen High School students.  Our Open House is Friday September 3, 2021.  Students can visit the building, locate their classes and lockers from 12:00-3:00.  Please access your schedules on HAC on August 27th after 5:00 p.m.  It is a good idea to screen shot your schedule and have it on your phone when you arrive. In addition, physical education uniforms will be sold at this time.  The cost is $25.00 for both shorts and a tee-shirt. Due to Covid-19 precautions, only AHS students many attend this event.

Student Schedules:

Student’s schedules will be posted on HAC August 27th after 5:00 p.m.  If changes to your schedule are required, please contact the school counseling office at 410-273-5585.

Testing:

Due to last year’s disruptions, the state is requiring that current students be tested on last year’s courses.  This includes rising 9th graders. We will use the start of the year to begin our testing. All student tests are participation only; passing scores are not required.  The data from the test will be used to guide our instructional planning moving forward.  More detailed information surrounding school testing will be forthcoming.

Back To School Night:

At this time Back to School night is planned for September 9th from 5:00-7:00 p.m.  Decisions whether or not this will be in-person event or one that takes places virtually have not been finalized at this point.  There will be more information to come.  Please note that this is a fluid process as we are trying to plan in accordance with local CDC guidelines. Please make sure that you are checking our school’s website and social media sites for changes and adjustments to upcoming events.

Back To School Supplies:

All students must have masks or a two-ply gator, should have ear buds available, pocket folders one or two binders, loose leaf paper, writing utensils and a water bottle. (At this time, water fountains are not in use).  Teachers will provide a more detailed list of required supplies once the school year begins.

You can also find a generic back to school supply list on our school’s website.

Students Computers:

Student computers will be distributed the first day of school in homerooms.  It is imperative that students bring back their signed User Agreement form during the first week of school.  To avoid damage to computers during the school day, students may carry a small computer bags no larger than the computer itself.  As a reminder, student’s computers must be charged each night and brought to school each day.

School Hours:

Please note that students are not permitted to enter the school prior to 7:00 as we would not have supervision available.  Also, students must leave the building at dismissal unless they need to stay for a legitimate school purpose, e.g. practice, meeting, teacher assistance or detention. Any students in the building after school must be under the supervision of an adult staff member. Lobbies and other areas of the school will be closed to all other students at 2:20 p.m. If you are waiting for a ride, be prepared to wait outside.
